How to hook up an outlet?

Do you need two hot wires and two neutral (and ground), or can a single hot and single neutral wire (with ground) work for a double electrical outlet?
Ok, sounds good. I'm trying to renovate my basement into a studio and I'm hoping to replace two lights with electrical outlets, so I'm just wondering if that's possible.

Yes, it's possible, but you don't know, or at least you
haven't said, near enough about the layout to do it
with or without our guidance.
Unless those lights are wired from instead of to the switch there are
going to be more than the two wires you need for the outlet in those
boxes, and you don't have a clue which pair to use do you?
If they're wired from the switch, then you'll need the switch 'on'
to use anything you wire to them.
Don't mess with power if you don't know what you're about.
