Dryer Receptacle
How could I wire a 4 prong dryer cord to a 3 wire dryer outlet?
I want to wire a 4 prong dryer cord to a 3 wire (black, copper, and white) dryer outlet. I know this is a dryer outlet because i took off the 3 prong dryer outlet box and saw only 3 wires black, copper, and white. The black and white were wired to the side terminals on the dryer receptacle and the copper on the "L" terminal. My concern is where, if possible would the "U" round prong on the 4 prong dryer cord connect to? If that "U" prong is used for ground since electrical codes have been updated, then does that mean the 3 prong dryer outlet did not have a ground? I do not see then why I could not wire the 4 prong to the 3 wire outlet configuration. I have heard the copper wire goes to ground, so why would it be wired to the "L" terminal on the 3 dryer outlet. I assume it was working before. This is an old house.
It means the three prong outlet doesn't have a neutral. Pure 220V only needs two hots and a ground. 220/110 outlets, or ones that you can get either voltage from have four wires, because they're suppose to have separate ground and neutral wires. Some people cheat and use one wire for both since ground and neutral are usually the same thing in non GFI outlets.
Anyhow, you can't hook that thing up by matching colors. White is probably neutral in the dryer, but hot in the outlet. Someone with a voltmeter who understands all types of outlets needs to check it out if you don't want to electrocute yourself.
All USA type. I'm not sure where you're from.
