is GFI wall plug wired the same as a regular three prong plug/?

If you are wiring as a single outlet it is simple
Black to brass colored screw
White to silver colored screw bare copper or green ( if you have a ground to green screw
These wires would go on the screws marked LINE

If you are trying to use the GFCI to protect other outlets those wires would go on the screws marked load
