How do I replace an OLD 2-wire (1 red 1 black) light switch with combo electrical outlet/switch?
I live in an old building. The bathroom only has 1 2-prong outlet and it is up on the light fixture. It's hard to get to, can't use anything with a big plug (hair dryer), etc.
I want to replace the light switch on my wall with a combo switch/outlet. I attempted to do this today, unsuccessfully. I purchased leviton "single pole switch with grounding outlet". The existing light switch only has 2 wires -- red and black. There is no ground.
With the new switch I can get either the switch or the outlet to work, but not both. I asked someone at a hardware store and they told me I would be out of luck without the grounding wire.
Is there any way I can get an outlet and a switch going in my bathroom without a grounding wire?

Nope, you are out of luck unless you can easily run a new neutral wire back to the electrical panel. Sorry, man, you are stuck with having the outlet on the fixture. Why don't you replace that with a modern one? There is your solution, they still make 'em. On top of that, the modern ones are GFCI, I think.
