Tips for gardening in texas?
This spring break I'm going to start plating flowers in my backyard. I want to be a landscape architect so this well be good practice to start designing my own back yard into something beautiful and see how i like it. So what are some tips you got or things you've learned from experience? Especially since not all places can grow the same type of plants, any thing i should know about planting in Texas, since its always hot dry weather here and all.

Coach Dave here and I work for The Home Depot. I get many questions about landscaping. There are a few guidelines I have learned from professional and creative people as well as my own projects.
First off don't be afraid to experiment, you can change things later if you decide to.
Another thing to remember is sometimes less is more. Too many plants will make a design seem like a jungle...unless a jungle is your goal.
Most people usually put the taller evergreens in the back, hedges closer, shorter shrubs next, perhaps a ground cover like grass, ivy or tree bark for filler, with colorful annuals in front. This is to achieve the shorter to taller aspect...makes sense?
When putting plants in a corner, it is a good idea to use: 1, 3, or 5 of each plant at a time. The reasoning is because nature has odd numbers and when you put two or four plants next to each other your eyes naturally compares the two.

Pavers, edging, retaining walls, and raised planters are the next step.
Finally, a water feature, lighting, and or low voltage lighting will add a dramatic effect to make your yard attractive day or night.
