How does a power saver reduce power consumption?
These small capacitve devices are indeed very ineffective and are not worth using. However, they are based on the priciple of power factor correction which is a very real function .
Its not any easy concept to explain without having an electrical background, but basically due to the behaviour of reactive loads (usually motor loads) Current will not be completely in phase with your voltage.
A power company does not base a customers electric bill on "True Power" consumption (measued in Watts), but will charge based Apparent power or Volt-amps (VA).
For example, where current and voltage are out of phase the amount of true power used is calculated using the following formula:
Power = voltage x current x power factor(PF). Lets assumne a 0.9 PF and 120V @ 30A being consistantly used for one hour.
The amount of true power used = 120V*30A*0.9 = 3.24kWh
What the power company will bill for 120V*30A = 3.6kWh
Contrary to what you may have heard, the power company does consider power factor. In fact they will impose penalties on those users (generally industrial customers) with a power factor less than 0.9. This is why companies will use large capacitors in their power lines to compensate for thier heavy inductive loads. ( Hyrdo One in Canada for example will impose as much as 80% penalties for the worst offenders)
Now it works very well in an industrial setting since the PF of a buisness remains fairly consistant or at least predictable over the course of the day. Its a little more difficult for the home since the PF will change significantly depending on what appliances will be running in the home at any given time.
Devices that can genuinely help with homes PF correction are very expensive and you would likely not see a real return on your investment for many many years.
