changing light fixture - the ceiling has 2 wires wht/blk - but new fixture has an extra green wire? what to do
If you only have two wires coming out of your ceiling then you house is not grounded. Or that particular circuit isn't grounded and you can either insulate the green wire and leave it alone or you could even cut it off. Everyone so far has said that you connect it to the metal box, but what you have to understand is that Green means ground, ground as in Earth ground. The box is nailed or screwed into a wooden rafter and is not grounded. Connect the green wire if it will make you feel better but it is not necessary.
The reason things are grounded is to provide an alternative electrical path should your neutral (or return voltage) wire fails.
If your neutral fails with the light you're hooking up it will simply not work regardless of what you do with the green wire.
I hate Insulation!!
